Grey in the mother of all Cannes screw-ups – "Grey Group Famousily effective"

Thanks to Andrew Bloch for spotting this one. It is gold. Sadly not of the winning Cannes Lion variety. WPP Group ad agency Grey hired a plane with one of those trailing banners. It wanted to make a splash at its party last night.

This is what it wanted to say: “Grey Group…Famously effective”. Sadly, whoever it hired to write the sign could not spell nor apparently could the person who signed it off. Famously effective indeed.

There is some speculation that this intentional. You know in a comedy French accent kind of way. I’m not so sure. Why not just say you’re famously effective? Comedy is, after all, a little tricky from a few thousand feet-up.

Surely they did this on purpose? Noone would have taken the slightest bit of notice if there had been no spelling mistake…..

Of course it’s intentional. Consequently this piece only serves to make Gordon Macmillan look a bit of a naive plum, even if he did backtrack toward the end.

    Plum. Well there you go.
