Miliband pressure sees Labour peer pull out of Sun on Sunday column

Maurice Glasman, the Labour peer and one time strategic advisor to Ed Miliband has pulled out of plans to write a weekly political column for the Sun on Sunday after words with the Labour leader.

That will be the same Mr Miliband who Glasman laid into in an article for New Statesman in January where he wrote that the Labour appeared to have “no strategy, no narrative and little energy”. Clearly the Sun was hoping for more of the same. Read more »

Sun on Sunday signs Nancy Dell’Olio and Toby Young

Lots of talk speculation flying around about what we will find in The Sun this Sunday. A few more tidbits have been released by the paper itself including that it has signed none other than Nancy Dell’Olio, former girl friend of Sven-Goran Eriksson, who will apparently “reveal what chic designs to wear”. There was speculation in the office that this will not involve her writing about best use of mirrors as she apparently doesn’t own any.

Also joining is Telegraph blogger and the author of ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’, Toby Young, whose signing was tipped yesterday by Guido Fawkes and confirmed today in the Spectator today. Read more »

Former New York Times CEO joins Fleishman-Hillard’s board

Janet Robinson the former CEO of the New York Times who surprised the industry when she stepped down in December has taken her first board job and is to join the Omnicom-owned Fleishman-Hillard’s International Advisory board. Read more »

Sun insider claims Sun On Sunday is “desperately seeking advertisers” for first issue

A Twitter account belonging to someone who purporting to be an ex-News of the World journalist claims there is little enthusiasm for The Sun on Sunday internally and that dummies of the paper have not been well received.

The account also claims the paper is struggling to find advertisers for the launch issue other than sister company Sky and that Tesco has pulled out of advertising in the first issue.

Sun on Sunday to launch on Sunday, big sales expected

Last week Rupert Murdoch told us that the Sun on Sunday will launch very soon.

He wasn’t kidding. Last night the news broke that The Sun on Sunday will launch this coming Sunday, February 26. The announcement comes seven months after News Corporation shut down the troubled News of the World.

The launch of the paper is announced boldly on the front page of the Sun this morning.

“Next weekend will see the birth of the first ever Sunday edition of your favourite paper. Rupert Murdoch announced last week that The Sun on Sunday would be coming “very soon”. Now that momentous new dawn is here.” Read more »

Murdoch tells staff Sun on Sunday will launch soon

Rupert Murdoch is understood to have told staff in an email, circulated before he addressed them (see below), that News Corporation is planning to launch the Sun on Sunday very soon.

He told staff: “We will build on The Sun’s proud heritage by launching The Sun on Sunday very soon”.

That puts paid to any talk fo Murdoch selling the Sun and it confirms what Murdoch said recently when  he denied the Sun on Sunday launch is on hold. Read more »

Sun journalists consider human rights challenge to News Corp inquiry team

An extraordinary battle appears to be shaping up at News International as Sun journalists battle management and the committee formed to to take responsibility for all matters regarding phone hacking. At the weekend the Management Standards Committee was responsible for the arrest of several sun journalist and contacts at the Sun raising fears that it was revealing legitimate contacts to the police.

This sparked a robust defence by Trevor Kavanagh in the paper on Monday and on TV and radio and now the Guardian is reporting that senior journalists at the Sun are considering a legal challenge to block the MSC. Read more »

Should Rupert Murdoch sell the Sun?

Another weekend another clutch of Sun journalists have been arrested. This time five were arrested and bailed “over allegations of inappropriate payments to police”.

The infection that quickly killed the News of the World appears to be sapping the Sun. The arrests were the second round at the Sun and over the weekend and led to some calling for Rupert Murdoch to sell the paper and be done with his rotten British tabloid business, which has tarnished his global media empire.
