Ten of the best US political attack ads – Nuking little Daisy tops the list

Great list of famous political US attack ads here via Ad Age. Some you will know, but what about the ad in the number one spot.

It is from Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 campaign and features a small girl pulling petals from a daisy before fading into a nuclear mushroom cloud.

1. Peace, Little Girl (“Daisy”)

2. “Morning in America” is the common name of an effective political campaign television commercial formally titled “Prouder, Stronger, Better” and featuring the opening line “It’s morning again in America.” The ad was part of the 1984 U.S. presidential campaign of Republican Party candidate Ronald Reagan.

The first of the Bush presidents attacking Michael Dukakis over defence spending.

Love this one. The Emmy Winning video “Yes We Can” is a collage style music video inspired by a speech delivered by Barack Obama following the 2008 New Hampshire primary, derived from similar union catch cries. The song was released on February 2, 2008 by the Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am on Dipdive.com and also on YouTube.

5. Man in the Arena

This one designed to reintroduce Richard Nixon, who had lost in his campaigns for president (1960) and governor of California (1962), and putting him on the road to Watergate.

6. America First
Candidate: George H.W. Bush
Consultant/Creator: Mike Murphy

7. Hound Dog
Candidate: Mitch McConnell
Consultant/Creator: Roger Ailes

8. Dean for America
Candidate: Howard Dean

This one isn’t a TV ad but an email and a Google AdSense campaign announcing the launch of what Ad Age says was “the first campaign blog that changed the modern political advertising world forever and catapulted a fiery former physician to the top of the pack of the Democrats hoping to take down President George W. Bush”.

9. Windsurfing
Candidate: George W. Bush
Consultant/Creator: Mark McKinnon

The George W Bush campaign takes aim at John Kerry and his flipflopping stance on a range of issues.

10. Willie Horton 1988 Attack Ad

Another well known attack ad from 1988 U.S. Election against Michael Dukakis. This ad was ran by the National Security PAC, not directly by the Bush/Quayle campaign.
