The Hacked Off campaigning group, which has been highly prominent throughout the Leveson inquiry with support from celebrities including Hugh Grant and JK Rowling, has already racked up more than 127,000 signatures of people supporting the victims and putting pressure on the government to implement the Leveson report in full.

A heartfelt speech from a tearful newly re-elected Barack Obama as he says thank you to his campaign team after he stopped by campaign headquarters in Chicago. He speaks from the heart about how grateful he is for everyone’s support. He took time to talk about the road he travelled from his early years as a community organiser as he tells the assembled campaign workers: “I’m really proud of all of you.”
Throughout the 2012 presidential there has been a marked difference between the style of message coming out of the Democratic and Republican presidential campaign teams.
Barack Obama’s campaign has at times been edgy and humorous. Occasionally this has backfired, such as the Tumblr post asking women to “vote like your lady parts depend on it”.
Compare that to the more serious and fear mongering messages that have peppered the Mitt Romney campaign.
These approaches are highlighted perfectly, and the reaction to them, in two recent ads from the two camps. First there is the TV spot made by ‘Tiny Furniture’ and ‘Girls’ creator Lena Dunham, which has whipped up a mas of controversy as right wing pundits froth at the mouth about the ad, which compares voting for the first time to losing your virginity.
The Evening Standard reports Scotland Yard has told Damian McBride, Gordon Brown’s former spin doctor, that emails which led to him losing his job might have been hacked. McBride lost his role as director of communications for Brown in 2009 in what was known as the “smeargate” scandal. It also saw Derek Draper the former Labour Insider step down as editor of the LabourList website.
The Smeargate scandal broke after emails between Draper and McBride were leaked detailing a plan to create a blog, called The Red Rag, to spread scurrilous stories and gossip about leading Tory party politicians.
Labour is piling the pressure on David Cameron over Chief Pleb Whip Andrew Mitchell who faces a showdown with senior Conservative MPs who want him to resign before he does lasting “damage” to the party’s reputation.
Is it just me or does it feels like lasting damage has already been done in what is a story that will not go away as Cameron doggedly stands by his man?
The Telegraph reports that Conservative chief whip will meet leaders of the backbenchers 1922 committee amid growing anger among its executive over the way his outburst at police has dominated the headlines in recent weeks.
The Guardian reports that the website founded by new Conservative co-party chairman Grant Shapps is to be investigated by the Advertising Standards Authority after complaints that it “misleadingly implied” that the Tory chairman’s alter ego was a real person.
Shapps and his wife are behind a string of get rich quick marketing websites and the investigation by the ad watchdog comes after a complaint from a blogger.
I saw the new Conservative Party poster campaign, ‘Labour isn’t learning’, on Saturday morning and thought it was a poor and confused ad. Not to mention a clunky Photoshop way of trying to highlight Labour’s economic plans.
Negative ads can be very powerful, although this makes little sense, and I doubt that this ad, created by M&C Saatchi, means anything much to the public who are faced the lack of growth and austerity measures of the coalition, but then I would say that.
Samuel L Jackson comes up to bat for Barack Obama’s campaign and does it in his own inimitable style in this ad as he asks America to “Wake the fuck up” in a spot paid for by the Jewish Council for Education and Research.
It has Jackson appearing in the home of an average American family who were swept up by the energy and excitement of the Obama campaign in 2008, but in the intervening four years that has all seeped away.
