Homeland star takes time to appear in Labour’s new election broadcast

David Estes from Homeland stars in Labour's new PEBAre you gripped by Homeland? Stupid question. The final episode appears next week with a second season on the way.

Labour’s Tribune magazine to be saved

I wrote earlier this week that the 75-year old left wing weekly magazine, Tribune, where George Orwell once worked, was to close.

However, a last minute deal has been agreed to save the title, according to a letter sent out last night and seen by Paul Anderson who has had a long history with Tribune.

Orwell’s Tribune magazine faces closure after 75-years

Sad news in the Guardian today, Tribune, the Labour weekly magazine founded in 1937, where George Orwell worked as literary editor, and whose editors have included the likes of Aneurin Bevan and Michael Foot, is facing imminent clousure.

The magazine, which for years was owned by a consortium of trade unions, was bought two years ago by property investor, Kevin McGrath, but as the weekly missed circulation and revenue targets he is no longer prepared to sink money into the title. Read more »

Select Committee says it will not call Piers Morgan to appear after Heather Mills’ allegations

UPDATE: 14:40 – Culture Select Committee chairman John Whittingdale has told Sky News that that while he is not calling upon Piers Morgan to appear he says the former Daily Mirror editor should return to the UK to set the record straight.

“Clearly there are questions which @PiersMorgan ought to answer”. Piers Morgan should come back to UK to answer those questions,” Whittingdale said. Read more »

Labour rebuilds links with Murdoch tabloid The Sun

Having famously ditched Labour in the most public fashion in September 2009 the party under new leader Ed Miliband is returning to the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid (which nicknamed Brown ‘The Prime Monster’) in the belief that it can not do without the power of the tabloid, which told its readers in no uncertain terms to vote Tory in 2010.

Yes to Fairer Votes campaign turns to scare tactics with Nick Griffin image

UPDATE – The Yes campaign has been on the phone to point out that the Nick Griffin image on its Facebook page is a fan image and not officially sanctioned. The campaign rightly finds the image distasteful and says it will be taken down. Glad to hear it.

Miliband readies online campaign for leadership race

Labour Party leadership frontrunner David Miliband MP is preparing to launch an ambitious online campaign capitalising on social media and blogger support to back his bid to succeed Gordon Brown.

Miliband said he has acquired a domain name and developed a campaign site for his leadership battle.

Miliband already has dmiliband.com and davidmiliband.net and has more than 20,400 followers on Twitter and rising (more than the Labour Party’s official @UKLabour account. However, that number has rocketed since Nick Clegg led his Liberal Democrats into government with the Conservatives as junior partners. It has hit almost 20,000 as thousands sign up online to join the party. Yesterday alone it signed up more than 4,000 members — last week the party had around 15,000 followers on Twitter.
